This is a repost of Shoreleave pt 1 because there have been a few changes.
Thanks go to Jay Vassos-Libove for his pointing out that firing all torpedoes
wouldn't actually do very much to help escape unless the ship was no longer in
warp.

Part 1
Captain's Log : Stardate 43739.1
We were on our way to Starbase 74 for some well-earned Rest and
Relaxation having successfully completed our assignment in the Bre'el
system, when the Enterprise was pulled out of warp by a mysterious force. The
exit from warp was so sudden that it damaged the warp engines; repairs are being
made, but the Enterprise will require the services of a drydock to completely
repair the damage.
All our efforts to determine the origin of this force have been
unsuccessful. However I have faith in the analytical abilities of Lt.
Commanders Data and LaForge, who are endeavouring to find its point of
origin which may reveal some clue as to its purpose.
Picard finished his log entry and turned to Counselor Troi. "Any comments,
Counselor?"
"There is a growing impatience amongst the crew, Captain. As you know they
were all looking forward to having a break at Starbase 74. However the
general attitude is one of resignation to a delay before shoreleave can
commence."
"Yes, that is what I expected. We are all used to shoreleave being delayed
due to orders from Starfleet."
Picard rose from behind his desk and gestured to the doors of his ready
room. "After you, Counselor."

Riker rose from the Captains chair as Troi and Picard re-entered the
bridge. "Nothing so far, Sir" he reported settling into his own seat.
"Geordi called up from Engineering that they may have found a way to
break free of this...whatever this is...and that he would report in when
Data had finished simulating it in engineering."
"Very well, Number One. Let us hope that Commander Data and Mr. LaForge
have solved this mystery and we can return to Starbase 74."
Counselor Troi, who had not yet sat down, then commented "If you will
excuse me Captain. I have an appointment in a few minutes."
Picard nodded his ascent and Troi left the bridge.
"Well at least someone's keeping busy" commented Riker.

"The simulation is ready to commence."
"Ok, Data. I'll be there in just a minute," called Geordi LaForge from his
precarious position in a Jeffries tube.
As Geordi descended, Data called the bridge and informed them that the
simulation was about to proceed.
Geordi came over to the station where Data had been entering equations.
"So let's try it, Data. I really hope this works, I want to get to
Starbase 74 as quickly as possible....I have a friend who's arranged
to meet me there."
Data started the simulation. It was set up to display events slower than
they would occur in real-time. If the idea worked the Enterprise would free
herself from the force pulling it along almost instantaneously.
The simulation completed and elated Geordi called the bridge; "It works!"
"Well done Commander LaForge, Mr. Data" came the Captains voice. "When can
we be ready to proceed?"
"We shall require 24 minutes 16 seconds to implement the necessary changes,
Captain" reported Data.

In her office Troi had just finished yet another session with Karla Cornish,
whose son had recently left for Starfleet Academy. Karla missed her son very
much; he was the only surviving member of her familiy since her husband had
died at the hands of renegade Klingons. Karla had basically said that all she
had left now was her archaological work. Troi never enjoyed these sessions
as they reminded her of Ian.
"Counselor Troi, report to the bridge."
"On my way Captain." She sighed, what she really wanted to do was go to ten-
forward and have a huge chocolate sundae to cheer herself up. Troi was
feeling very tired and the situation the Enterprise was now in had already
delayed her shoreleave. Holodecks were alright but they could never compare
to a real shoreleave.

As Troi stepped out of the turbolift she heard Geordi reporting.
"We'll need you to fire all photon torpedoes at maximum spread on my
mark, Captain. Combining that with our backwards pull should give us that
little extra required to break free."
"On your mark then, Commander LaForge. Mr. Worf...."
"Photon torpedoes are armed, Captain. Laying in maximum spread pattern."
Picard turned to Troi, "Ah, Counselor. We felt it would be best to have
you on the bridge when we attempt to break free. There is a small chance
that you might sense something as we do so, and I felt that it would be
easier to have you here already."
"1 minute to my mark, Captain" came Geordi's voice.
"Ready, Mr.Worf?"
"Aye, Sir!"
"5..4..3..2..1..NOW!"
"Firing photon torpedoes!"
As the torpedoes were fired the entire ship shook with the strain of trying
to escape. Then the torpedoes detonated and the Enterprise was buffeted by
shock waves. The science personnel manning the stations at the aft of the
bridge were thrown into the railing dividing the aft and fore bridge.
The shaking subsided and the somewhat battered crew returned to their posts.
"Report, Mr. LaForge!"
"Scanning now, Sir........I don't understand it. We appear to be still caught
by the force. Proceeding in the same direction as before, Sir!"
"What went wrong, Mr. LaForge?"
"I don't know, Sir. It should've worked!"

Part 2
Captain's Log : Stardate 43739.5
It has been 4 hours since our attempt at breaking free from the force
which is pulling the Enterprise. Commanders LaForge and Data are unable to
explain why the attempt was unsuccessful and after viewing the simulation which
Commander Data set up; I must agree with their analysis that there is no logical
reason for it.
The doorchime to Picards ready room sounded.
"Come"
Counselor Troi entered and Picard indicated that she should sit on the other
side of his desk. Troi seemed unusually agitated and figeted as she waited for
the Captain to finish his log entry.
"Sensors have detected a small Class-M planet ahead and the Enterprise appears
to be heading directly for it. I can only assume that this is our mystery
destination. In the meantime, we can only wait and see."
"Counselor, is something wrong?"
"I'm not really sure Sir. You remember that I was on the bridge in case I sensed
anything during the attempt to break free...."
"Yes, as I recall you said that you had sensed nothing unusual"
"Yes Captain. That's what I thought at the time. However I have been begining
to sense something as we approach the planet, and it seems awfully familiar.
I may have caught only a flicker of it before, so small that my conscious mind
did not regsiter it."
"What exactly are you sensing Counselor?"
"It's old, Sir. Old and patient, with a flicker of amusement. It's very
powerful.......somewhat reminiscent of what I feel whenever Q is around.
Although you could never describe Q as patient."
"Very well, Counselor. Please inform me if you sense any changes."
* * * * *
In ten-forward Guinan looked out of a viewport towards the planet.
"Not here..." she muttered.
* * * * *
The Enterprise reached the class-M planet and settled into a standard orbit.
"Captain. The force which has pulled us here has ceased" reported Data
"Thankyou, Mr. Data. Opinions, Number One?"
"Did you find the origin of the force, Data?"
"Not exactly Sir. I had narrowed it down to within 10 kilometres before it
vanished."
"Captain, request permission to take an away-team down to the planet. We may
be able to find out why we're here if we find whoever...or whatever brought
us here."
"One moment, Number One. Mr.Data are there any signs of civilisation or
life forms?"
"Negative Captain. Reading no life signs at all."
"Take your away team down to the area pin-pointed by Mr.Data......"
Troi, who had been sitting quietly during this discussion, interrupted the
conversation.
"Captain. I'd like to go down to the planet...If that's alright with
you, Will?"
Riker looked surprised. "Deanna, why?"
"I've been sensing ....an intelligence .... since we started approaching this
planet. On the surface I might have a better idea of what it's intentions are."
"That sounds reasonable" said Picard turning to Riker.
"Agreed." Riker rose from his seat. "Data, Mr.Worf..."
As the away-team left the bridge. Picard gave the conn to the Lieutenant at Ops
and entered his ready room.
* * * * *
Riker, Troi, Data and Worf were joined in the transporter room by Geordi and
Lieutenant Creeg of Security. Chief O'Brien standing behind the transporter
controls muttered to Geordi.
"I hope you lot get this thing sorted out quickly. I had a really good
shoreleave planned before this little side-trip."
"We'll be as quick as we can, Chief" replied Geordi.
The away team took their stations on the platform and with a sparkle of light
were beamed down to the planet.
